Principal's Ponderings

As we reflect on the year that has passed and look forward to the next year of schooling and school life, I would like to thank the staff at Charleville SDE for the wonderful support they have been for our students. Each staff member plays an integral role in the smooth running of the school, and in the achievements of the students.

Sadly we are farewelling some of these super people:

Transfers out: Confirming that the following people have received the following placements: Brent – Coolum SHS; Fallon – Narangba SS; Lisa – Yarrilee SS; Kathy - Woodlinks State School SS; Karen – Charleville SS; Kate Wheeler – North Coast region for when she returns from her adventures!

Coming in we look forward to the following "newbies" to make their mark and become part of the team here at SDE:

Transfers in: Jenny Fisher returning; Debra Jensen – eKindy; Venessa Moore – Secondary; Renae Heinemann; Rebecca Washbrook; and, Rachel Cooper, Alex Kirby and Jack Morris are now permanent employees of EQ and as such will remain on staff.

Kate is working with the information received so far from families to establish numbers and classes. This may make a difference to the number of teachers we have.

We have held interviews for the permanent position of the Business Services Manager in our school. Tippy (Roslyn) Nicholson has been appointed and commenced on the 24th November. Welcome to the team Tippy. A special thank you to Virginia for the support she has given during her time as BSM.

We have negotiated a workforce reform that will allow us to have a Head of Department – Teaching and Learning for 2016. This will replace the Curriculum Coordinator role and will be comprised of the Teacher /Librarian position and .02 Curriculum position. The successful applicant will become part of the leadership team and will continue to support teachers and Home Tutors in the delivery of the curriculum as well as work with Kate and I to further develop teacher capability and support the learning of the students.

The role of Curriculum support, Teaching and Learning and Pedagogy is a critical part of ensuring that teachers and Home Tutors have the support that they need in delivering the curriculum to our students. As the curriculum has changed this role has grown in accountability, responsibility and expertise. Once established for a year, then renegotiated for two more consecutive years it becomes a substantive positon in our school. This positon has been advertised across the region as an EOI for 2016. All applications will be considered by a panel, and the position will commence in January 2016.

Musical/Swim Muster/Speech and Awards and Graduation:

A very special thank you to Brent and Helen for the work that they have done to bring about the Musical this year. It was a very special evening and demonstrates that we can do anything that we set our mind to. Also a very big thank you to all of the staff who committed to helping out, training students, making props and giving of their time on the night.

SDE Principals' Meetings:

On the 22nd and 23rd October the Principals met in Brisbane. While we met on the Thursday, Curriculum staff and Deputies met to discuss the Effective Reading in SDEs. Strategies from this will be shared across the schools.

The Principals' agenda included:

  • SODEA: restating the position, developing a flowchart and procedures that will best meet the needs of the SODEA reps and the group's advocacy for the students in our schools.
  • NAPLAN online: We were updated with the planning and progress in the preparation for NAPLAN on-line. In 2019 all states will be completing NAPLAN online.
  • STEM, Coding and Robotics: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is a focus of our department to prepare students for new jobs in the future. Coding and Robotics are a part of this: see last Newsletter. The content will be provided by DET and ILMs will be developed by the ETEACH team who are already developing the other new Key Learning Areas.

Western Alliance:

We have celebrated a very successful year of the Western Alliance. Unfortunately we are losing the three Leaders from the staff and are working on continuing the smooth running with four new teachers across our Alliance staffing. The subject allocation is still being decided as enrolments are confirmed and teachers are appointed.

Thargomindah Learning Centre:

Megan Johannesen is taking 12 months maternity leave from the position of Teacher Aide supervising these students and the position has been filled by a temporary Teacher aide for the 12 months. We are very excited to welcome Mrs Carmel Beresford as the supervisor of the students in the Learning Centre for 2016.

I wish you all a wonderful, safe and happy holidays.

Jenny

From the Deputy's Desk

So we still have a busy week ahead of us. Congratulations to all who participated in the inaugural Musical Production – Gnomes and Gardens. This was a great success.

Thank you also to those who have returned their enrolment advice to me in the past few weeks, this has been most helpful in allowing us to sort out our staffing for the next year. At present I am still working on developing class lists, assigning teachers to classes and of course timetables. I am aiming to be able to make some of this information available prior to the end of the year. If you are aware of anyone in your area that is considering enrolling with us for the 2016 school year please encourage them to contact the school as soon as possible.

Reporting

Report cards are currently being written by class teachers and will be distributed to students in the final week of the term. It is important to remember that your student's report card is a reflection of the work completed by them over the past semester.

This reporting period we have asked teachers to consider the purpose of the report card and to compose their comments on the students work with this in mind. The purpose of the report card is to report on the student, the progress made and to provide advice on areas for improvement. With this in mind teachers' comments on each subject area will contain the following:

A content statement – this will outline briefly the knowledge and skills focus of the subject.
A progress statement – this will provide information on the student's current level of skills in the subject area.
A final statement – this will provide suggestions on what the student may do to improve.

Parents and Home Tutors are encouraged to share report cards with their children and to discuss the comments and grades with them. It is important for children to be able to see how they have done in each semester and to discuss with their parent what they may be able to do in order to continue to grow and progress.

When looking at report cards it is also important that we remember that each child is an individual and that we only compare them with themselves, it can be useful to look back on previous reports in order to see the progress made by each individual. It is vital that we celebrate the successes our kids make on a daily, weekly and even term by term or semester to semester basis.

It is also important to remember that "C"s are good. This is the standard at which all the curriculum for our students is written, a student achieving a C is working at the standard for that year level. You may like to let grandparents, aunts and uncles in on this one!

Camp 2016

Camp for 2016 has been booked and the quotes are in. I would like to thank the P&C for their generous commitment to assist students in accessing this camp next year. Detailed information about the 2016 Canberra and Snow camp will be provided early in 2016. Students in years 4-6 at Charleville SDE and those in years 7-10 across the Western Alliance will be invited to attend.

Now is the time to start your training and getting fit for 3 days of skiing and the days spent exploring Canberra!

Holidays

With the school holidays rapidly approaching I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support this year. 2015 has been yet another busy year full of challenges and changes, doubtless before we know it 2016 will also be done and dusted. I hope though that all of us can take the time to 'smell the roses' and have a bit of time to spend on ourselves over the coming weeks that we will all spend out of the classroom. May there be much wet stuff for all – I am putting in my order with the fat red fellow and hope that he delivers some to each of us.

Take care and have a happy holiday!

Cheers Kate

PLO Prattle

Whoo, Term 4 has been a whirlwind of lots happening. Minischools were well attended and from all accounts everybody had a great time. Swim Muster was held under rolling thunder and storms, with Kanyanna being the victors. Musical, what can I say but "Congratulations to all the students involved", it was fantastic. To only have one face to face rehearsal before the performance! Speech and Awards morning was lovely to see so many people attending, each year we order more chairs than the previous year and we still need more. To top off a busy few days, the celebrations continued with the Years 6 & 10 Graduation. The students looked great, dressed up and smiling as they venture onto the next stage of their lives.

Kick Start Conference 2016 brochures have been put in mail bags this week, so watch out for this exciting event which will kick off the new school year. The dates are Tuesday 2nd February to Friday 5th February 2016. Make sure you book your accommodation early. These are a few of the sessions/activities on the program: New Home Tutor Session, Back to Front Maths, Robina Meehan for the adults, Hockey Qld, Qld Flying Artist working on Totem Pole Sculptures, Weaving and Lantern making with the students again.

I wish you all a safe and hopefully wet Christmas and New Year.

Cheers

Curriculum Corner

Where has this year gone!? I can't believe that we are up to our last newsletter for the year and only have a few weeks left in the term.

This morning in writing my newsletter article I have decided to take ten minutes out of my morning to stop and really reflect on the year that has been. I'm not going to think of the list of things I need to get done today, let alone the list of things I need to get done before the end of the year. I'm going to close my door and close my eyes and think. Just 10 minutes.

Sadly, the first thing that comes to my mind is "what didn't I get to do/fix".

I didn't get to pretty up the spelling program. I didn't get to have the professional conversation with the other teacher at Longreach Distance Ed. I wish I could have done more for the Preps this year. Did I do enough for the teachers?

No. STOP.

Quite often when we reflect, we still think about what we still need to improve or what we didn't achieve. Very rarely do we stop and think… "What were my successes this year?"

Again, my first thought was "I've survived 12 months in a new and challenging role". YAY! And then I get a little more serious and I think about what it is that I have actually achieved this year. The list started off short… but the more I think, the more I can add. So here it is… what I think my top 5 achievements are for this year:

  1. Considering the concerns of parents/families and staff and thinking about whether we can do better (and actually seeing some of these improvements happen!)
  2. Implementation of programs to help our struggling and extension students
  3. Supporting teachers to become more confident in what they're doing or providing support to them in times when they're feeling overwhelmed
  4. The spelling program and especially hearing the individual stories of how this has helped many students
  5. Lastly and perhaps the one I'm most proud of is the conversations I've had with parents. To be honest, I've made some cry (not a celebration) but in many cases, I feel like I have been able to provide some support. I may not have been able to provide a solution in all cases, but I have tried my hardest and I know that this support has truly helped some families.

So now that I have babbled on enough about me, I would like to leave you with one last challenge or question…

What are your top 5 celebrations/successes for 2015?
What are your child's top 5 celebrations/successes for 2015?

I have a passion for what I do. I believe in education with everything I have and I will do whatever I can to help students achieve in their own little way. This isn't any different from parents wanting the best for their child so it is comforting to know we can all be on the same page. Please continue to learn with your child outside of school… have conversations, share a book together, play some trivia with the road signs. Enjoy learning while enjoying a break… but please… enjoy a break and celebrate those successes!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic, safe and happy holiday. I hope that each of you gets to spend time with loved ones and I hope that some of this teasing rain manages to produce some goods over the next couple of months.

I look forward to hearing all the stories and more in 2016.

Thanks
Zoe Farrer

P & C News

Swim Muster/Musical/Speech and Awards/Year 6 & 10 Graduation

What a fabulous couple of days the school community shared in. We were lucky enough to squeeze swim muster in between storms. Congratulations to Kanyanna on your victory. Commiserations to Narungi, you put up a very good fight. All students deserve a pat on their back for their participation, spirit and their sportsmanship. A huge thanks to the teachers and organisers for another successful swim muster.

Monday night's musical was outstanding. The students put on a great display for their first musical, especially considering the distances between them all. Again wonderful support and friendship was shown with students helping each other. What an experience for our students to participate in and there are definitely some budding actors out there. Brent Brown, Helen Cook, Karen Scheerer and all the support teachers did an amazing job of getting our kids organised. We appreciate the extra yards you put in. Thank you to those ladies and gents who ran the bar for the P and C to raise funds for the many ventures we will be undertaking in 2016 and to Leith Brennan for the delicious steak burgers.

Bright and early Tuesday morning we all rocked up for the annual Speech and Awards ceremony. Congratulations to the Junior School captains on their magnificent job as MCs and to all the students who received awards. We wish all departing families and teachers the very best and thank you for your contributions to the P and C and the school. The staff did a wonderful job with the smoko and it all looked scrumptious sitting on the tables. A huge thanks to everyone involved in this event.

The last thing for this trip was the Graduation for Year 6 and 10 students. The families of the Graduating students enjoyed a delicious lunch before the ceremony started. It was lovely to hear the reflections from teachers about the students and to celebrate their completion of Grade 6 and Grade 10. Again a huge thanks to the staff who organised this event. Congratulations to all the students and we wish them every success in their future endeavours.

Kickstart 2016

Kickstart in the second week of school next year is a fabulous week with plenty of fun things for the children to do with their teachers and coaches. It is a good time for the children to meet their new teachers in person as well as their classmates. This is also a great week for home tutors/ govies to meet the staff, meet new friends and learn lots of things to help in the classroom.

Fundraising

The P&C have set a new goal - to help fund a playground at the school. Got an idea how we can raise the cash? We'd love to hear from you!

WA CAMP ARTICLE

THUNDERSTORMS, GREEN GRASS & JUMPING OFF CLIFFS

At any school, camp is a time for adventure and excitement, however at Distance Education it is a special moment for students to conquer fears, push their limits, and make memories with their friends without barriers of distance or isolation. In Week 4, of Term 4 students and teachers in the Western Alliance made the long (and often squishy) journey to Thunderbird Park, Mt Tamborine.

Day 1: The wheels on the bus go round and round… and round… and round…

The journey was not without its hiccups, as Miss Kling and Mr McDonald drowned the poor Bakery rolls in a pool of ice, and a few students made mad dashes to the bus through some much needed rain. There was a buzz of excitement as the bus pulled into Charleville School of Distance Education, and the students met with some of their classmates, most of which they hadn't seen for months. After trying tirelessly to get in a comfortable position on the bus, most managed to get a few hours' sleep before pulling into the (green) Thunderbird Park and meeting the Mt Isa students.

Day 2: Hugh breaks all time mudcourse record, and Mr Morris fails at Put Put

The clean showers lasted less than a day, after the much anticipated Survivor Mudcourse. You needed guts, determination, old clothes and a willingness to get your hair muddy to survive the course, which was physically demanding and really smelly. Students ducked, weaved, rolled and jumped through the sloshy pit. Our bush kids could not be defeated, with many running rings around the existing all-time record of 20 laps, in particular Hugh Spackman triumphed with 24 laps. That evening was time for Put Put Golf, and despite the sleepy eyes and weary legs, everyone had a great time fishing golf balls out of the water, celebrating awesome shots and giggling at Mr Morris when he scored a 6 on the final hole.

Day 3: Miss Kling stacks it, and the Titanic sinks (many times)

There would be no mercy shown on the laser skirmish field, each person had their own strategy;

Some people went in guns blazing
Some people took on the role of sniper
Some people stayed closer to the base
Some people tripped over a tree root and nearly cried.

After an action-packed morning, the students had to work together as a team in the raft building exercises, or face the possibility of capsizing. Although all made valiant efforts in constructing the rafts, it seemed that quality control lacked a little, and it all fell apart for some teams (pun intended). Students had to raft out to a point in the middle of the lake, before being pulled back to the bank by their team mates in a relay race. Most ended up wet but it was a great excuse to make another trip to the rock pools that evening. The day finished with a relaxing movie, where the teachers definitely did not cry in Big Hero 6 and we all ate too much popcorn.

Day 4: Pushing kids off cliffs, lighting fires & walking a fine line

Revenge. Sweet, sweet revenge. After the onslaught at laser skirmish the teachers were quite pleased to know the students would be thrown off cliffs on Wednesday morning. In all seriousness though, this was one of the most mentally challenging activities for our students, with many facing fears of heights, and conquering the challenge of that first step off the ledge. We couldn't be more proud of everyone that attempted the descent. For those not insane enough to climb off a cliff, students learned important survival skills by making protection, finding water and starting a fire. That afternoon students tried slacklining, which needed focus, balance and concentration to walk the tightrope. Wednesday ended with a game of Bunco, an edge of your seat dice game, which had the students very excited just before bed time (thanks Mr McDonald).

Day 5: Climbing to dizzying heights, Lion King & losing to Granny and Grandpa

As if we didn't get enough heights the day before, Thursday morning was the Treetop Challenge; a death defying ropes course designed to test strength, balance and endurance (and some really fun zip lines!) Despite some students (and teachers) having a crippling fear of heights, with the support of their peers everyone was able to complete at least one of the courses. On the last afternoon; the weary watched the Lion King (I don't think Mufasa dying will ever not be sad) and the others challenged an elite group of volleyball experts (the teachers) in the ultimate battle. Knees were grazed, hopes were dashed and some were victorious.

The last night was a mixture of happiness and a twinge of sadness knowing a fantastic camp was drawing to a close. At the bonfire students roasted marshmallows, shared warm and fuzzies and cut a rug on the dancefloor (mainly Kaine).

Day 6: The wheels on the bus go round and round… and round… and round… again

To say it was a teary farewell would be a drastic understatement – and not just because we knew we had to get back on that bus. I cried. I mean really cried. And yes, it was an ugly cry. A cry which had a domino effect on many of the students – whoops. I know I speak for all staff (and Kat from Thunderbird Park) when I say that it was the group of students who made the camp so special. A huge thanks to the staff, families and students who made the week possible!

Kilometre Club!!

At the end of four weeks Kanyanna were the winners of the Kilometre Club challenge with 934 km to Narungi's 916km. Narungi were the overall winners for 2015 though with 2574km making it all the way from Charleville to Mackay while Kanyanna unfortunately puffed out half way to Rockhampton on 1723km. Thank you everyone for your fantastic effort this year. Kilometre Club will run again each term of next year. Hopefully we will make it all the way back to Charleville too!!

Year 2C & 3C

Hi all. As part of our English units this year, Year 2 & 3C have been learning about the importance of the images adding meaning to picture books. Using the wonderful, free computer program Tux Paint, they have created some amazingly detailed illustrations to go with their Christmas stories. You can download the program and the stamps from the internet, or send a USB stick to Miss Herwig and she will send it out to you. Enjoy!!
